Scouting the Chiefs
The Sequoyah Chiefs started slow last season before finishing strong behind some impressive defensive performances. The Chiefs had a revolving door at quarterback due to injury before Kolby Martin settled in and led the team to win five of their last 8 games to lose out the season. Sequoyah returns experience up front on the offensive line in Brady Curl, Asher Martineau and Dimitri Morris. They also have one of the most dynamic players in the Cherokee County in Jackson Hancock. Hancock, a Missouri signee, will see time at safety, in the backfield at running back and on special teams. Bretton Darling will join Hancock in the secondary and we expect the duo to make an impact in run support and with limiting the opposition's passing attack.
Scouting the Longhorns
The Lambert Longhorns will be replacing do everything quarterback James Tyre who graduated earlier this year. While the Longhorns lose all of their experience at quarterback, they do return an experience backfield in Cam Bland, Ethan Terry and Tommy Lafayette. The trio combined for 1,545 yards and 19-TDs. Christian Smith will provide experience in the receiving corps, as he caught 16 passes for 253 yards and 4-TDs a year ago. Defensively, Finn Braeuer and Branson Brooks will look to continue their disruptive ways. The duo combined for 14.5 sacks in the 2022 season.
The Skinny
Sequoyah had no answer for Lambert a season ago. Expect the Chiefs stingy defense to pick up where they left off last season. They’ll need to contain Lambert's ground attack and then find a way to get the ball in the hands of Jackson Hancock. Tyler Bell might be an x-factor in the backfield for the Chiefs as he sets the table for the rushing attack. We like Sequoyah to exact a measure of revenge in the opener. Chiefs by 6.
